I started interacting with the people I had dreamed for so long of helping. In the quiet moments at the research lab, as the patients and their families filled out consent forms, they presented me with questions not only about the prosthetic arms, but about living a life that requires a prosthetic arm. Can we take this one home? How much will it cost? What do I do if my insurance doesnt cover arms anymore? How am I supposed to keep a job?
Initially, I didnt know the answers. Then I did. But I didnt know how to tell patients the truth: The American medical system makes no real accommodations for the vast majority of amputees. Prosthetic arms and legs, unless they are truly rudimentary, typically cost more than $60,000. They require replacement parts every year that can cost thousands more, and only a small fraction of the cost of limbs and spare parts is covered by insurance.

Prosthetics equipment is a type of medical device used to replace missing or damaged body parts. Prosthetics can range from simple hand or leg braces to complex robotic limbs. Prosthetics can be used to replace lost limbs, restore mobility, and improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
The cost of prosthetics can vary greatly depending on the type of prosthetic and the complexity of the device. Generally, basic prosthetics such as hand or leg braces can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. More complex prosthetics such as robotic limbs can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Insurance companies may cover some of the cost of prosthetics, but it is important to check with your insurance provider to determine what is covered.
There are a number of manufacturers that produce prosthetics equipment. Some of the most popular manufacturers include Ossur, Ottobock, Hanger, and Fillauer. These companies specialize in producing high-quality prosthetics that are tailored to the individuals needs. They also offer a wide range of products, from basic braces to advanced robotic limbs.
