When to Use An Hydraulic Oil Suction Filter vs. Strainer

Oil Suction Filter and How It Works

An oil suction filter is a component of a hydraulic system that helps remove contaminants from the oil before it enters the system. The filter, located in the oil reservoir, works by trapping pollutants in its filter media. It helps keep the oil clean and prevents it from entering the system, where it could cause damage.

There are two types of oil suction filters: Cartridge filters and Spin-on filters. Both types have benefits and drawbacks, so you’ll need to decide which is best for your needs.

Cartridge Style Filter

This type of filter has a cylindrical housing with a replaceable filter element inside covered with a mesh screen that traps contaminants as the oil passes through it.

Spin-on Filter

This type of filter contains a canister that spins around, which helps to remove contaminants from the oil. It’s less likely to become clogged than a cartridge filter, but it can be more challenging to replace.

Difference between using an oil suction filter and a strainer in hydraulic systems

Filters and strainers are both critical in the operation of a hydraulic system. Both are designed to remove contaminants, but they do so in different ways.

  • Suction filters are typically located at the beginning of the hydraulic circuit, before the pump. Their purpose is to remove any small particles or debris that may be present in the oil, which could potentially damage the pump or other components further down the line.
  • Strainers, on the other hand, are usually located after the pump (between the pump and reservoir), and their job is to remove any larger contaminants that may have made it past the suction filter.

While suction filters and strainers serve an essential purpose, they are not interchangeable. Each has a specific function to perform to keep your hydraulic system running smoothly.

Using the wrong device (or failing to use either) can seriously damage your equipment, so be aware of the difference and ensure you’re using the suitable machine for the job.

Benefits of using an oil suction filter

  • An oil suction filter helps keep the oil clean and prevents it from entering the system, where it could cause damage.
  • The filter is typically located in the oil reservoir, and it works by trapping contaminants in its filter media.
  • This helps keep the oil clean and prevents it from entering the system, where it could cause damage.
  • They are relatively easy to use and maintain.
  • They can help improve machinery’s efficiency by ensuring the oil is correctly filtered and can flow more freely.

How to choose the right oil suction filter for your needs

When selecting an oil suction filter, you must consider the pollutants in your hydraulic system. If your oil contains several particles, you will require a filter capable of capturing them. A strainer may be a better solution if there is a great deal of dirt or metal shavings in the system.

Additionally, you must evaluate the flow rate of your system. The greater the flow rate, the greater the filter’s efficiency requirements. You must also check that the filter can withstand your system’s maximum pressure and temperature.

Finally, you must choose the filter housing you desire. Spin-on filters are less costly and easier to replace than cartridge filters. Spin-on filters are less prone to become blocked, but replacing them might be more challenging.

What is the purpose of suction filters?

The primary purpose of suction filters and strainers is to trap and remove impurities from the hydraulic fluid.

Hydraulic fluid is easily contaminated, mainly due to lack of initial cleaning. For this reason, the fluid contamination is prevalent right after the installation of new equipment. During the initial “breaking in” period, metal flakes from the machinery can potentially damage the pump or other sensitive system components. As the process fluid flows through the system, the filter or strainer trap contaminating particles and pollutants.

The importance of “first-line” filtration

Suction filters represent the “first-line” filtration and are often referred to as safety filters.

The main purpose of suction filters is to:

  • avoid the entry of contamination into the hydraulic circuit
  • prolong the lifetime of finer downstream filtration
  • reduce the particulate-load on the finer filter, thus extending service life-intervals, unplanned downtime and maintenance
  • avoid damage to the finer downstream filter from coarse particulate, such as rust

Therefore, an effective suction filtration ensures a reduction in running costs of the hydraulic-pump.

Let’s see a brief overview of the main suction filters for hydraulic applications.

Suction Strainers

Strainers are fully submerged filter elements installed onto the suction inlet or piping of a pump. They  generally feature a coarse mesh screen designed to capture and collect large particulates as the fluid flows into the pump. Suction strainers are widely used as they are cost effective and are housed within the reservoir, thus reducing the need for any external work. They are typically made with a 125-micron wire mesh media to remove large particles, but they are also available with filtration degree from 60 to 250 micron. They can be equipped with a magnetic column for retaining ferrous particles, with or without a bypass valve.

Spin-On Suction Filters

Spin-On Suction Filters are hydraulic filter assemblies with an aluminum head and one or two spin-on elements, usually mounted inline. The main advantages of spin-on configuration are the easy servicing and the reduction of maintenance costs. Rated at a maximum flowrate of 150 l/min, spin-on filters cover a wide range of mobile and industrial applications.

Inline Suction Filters

Inline suction filters are mainly used when there is no room available inside the tank or in case the pump is far from the reservoir. They can be used up to 700 l/min and can be equipped with a clogging indicator.

Semi-submerged Suction Filters

Tank-wall mounted filters are designed with a built-in valve that can be closed by use of a handwheel to enable a change of the element without emptying the reservoir. Elements are typically available with 25-250 micron ratings. They can be used up to 500 l/min and can be equipped with a clogging indicator.
