Modular conveyors are generally designed with hygiene in mind and are typically made from Stainless Steel Grade 304. Also known as radius belts, they are flat belt conveyors made up of individual plastic or steel modules usually linked together using joint rods. Described as the middle ground between the conventional belt and chain conveyors.

MODULAR CONVEYORS OFFER SEVERAL ADVANTAGES INCLUDING

- Being extremely robust and hard-wearing

- Ability to tolerate high and low-temperature products

- Being extremely versatile and durable, making them cost-effective and efficient

- Easily maintaining your system

- Being perfect for the food and pharmaceutical industries

- Individual slats being easily replaced

- Perfect for cooling lines

- Transporting products with sharp edges

- Being resistant to chemicals

The characteristics of the belt itself mean that products can be conveyed in many ways; inclined, horizontal, corkscrew & circular paths making it perfect for confined areas. They can also absorb lateral forces, allowing products to be moved diagonally.

For obvious hygiene reasons, the food industry belt materials have to be approved by MHRA. This is to ensure that no contamination is transferred while foodstuff is being processed and manufactured. The main plastics used in the manufacture of modular belts for food transportation are Polyethylene and Polypropylene. Nylon can also be used as it has high-impact strength and excellent chemical resistance.  Nylons are also MHRA approved and versatile enough as it performs well in different temperatures.

Polypropylene is used for belts that may be exposed to extremely hot temperatures of up to 100 degrees Celsius. It is rigid and creates a strong pulling force. It can be used for conveying heavier loads as it drives the belt forward. Polypropylene has strong resistance to chemicals, making it easy to maintain and clean.

Belts made from polyethylene can be used in colder temperatures, as it has high pulling strength, is strong and resistant to impact, and can be used in environments as low as -75 degrees Celsius.  Polyethylene has a much longer life span than alternatives.
