underlayment question...roofing paper ok?

that is what I am asking.....

30 lb felt paper is like 15 dollars for 200 square feet, but maybe the roofing paper is going to smell like a roof in the summer when it gets hot....dont want that ....


but really, I would have no problem putting that down,

it is on a wood subfloor, and it is even......and level

what are the three things underlayment does....?

*fixes imperfections in the floor.....BUT, my floor is even
*acts as a moisture barrier....BUT, I am in the northeast, and moisture should be ok....
*acts as an acoustical barrier....THIS is what I really want....
*keeps the manufactures warranty.....I dont care....they are prorated anyway, and my floor is cheap, 99 cents stuff, with only 10 year warranty
*I have been told that the floor can break and seperate from too much movement with out an underlayment.....I would think this would be critical if the floor were not level.......BUT, my floor is level , and I find it hard to believe that the floor would just SELF DESTRUCT...

so, CAN I USE 30 LB FELT PAPER?...seriously, it would be easier for me, and save me money, and as long as it doesn't stink up the room, and provided a little sound barrier, and I guess is would have moisture barrier properties as welll.......


ok, kick the heck outta my rear for pushing the issue, but WHY NOT?

just cause the manufacture says so? well...who make the underlayment....the manufacture, right?

and, I DID NOT PUT underlayment in my bedroom and living room , about 225 square each room, and I know it has only been about a month, but no problems......

hey , when it falls apart in 3 years. .....I will have some humble pie for lunch....

but I find that hard to see happening....

how BOUT THIS>......is anyone else out there cheap like me, and did NOT install the underlayment, and it was junky, or fell apart?

AND the only reason I want to do it on the rental with the underlayment , is that the LR is a 28 foot run, and it is the main traffic area to the house.....and if I sell the house, I don't want the little clicking distracting a buyer.....it doesn't bother me....or my family ...they dont' eeven notice it....

but a picky buyer might....


and, the cheapest I could find is about 18 cents per square foot shipped on ebay....about 100 dollars total....

now if I go and get 30 lb felt, it is only 200 square foot for 16 dollars.....

so, I could save money, and the leftover could be used for my roofing projects.....


seriously , .....set me straight, or say you don't know.....

I will live with my decision......

correct I'll give you that it will not be the same as inside but if you have no water running under or swelling up against the foundation you shouldn't have much of a problem. Its my first house and I didn't want a slab and could either have done unfinshed basement and smaller house or larger house on a crawl and I can build a shop. My entrance to the craw is from my garage so I wouldn't have any problem sealing it up and making it condition at a later time if needed.

That being said I guess the 15# felt would be best no reason to put anything more down?
