Rubber Belting Pt. 1

Rubber is a durable elastomer that is commonly used in making conveyor belts. There are many different types of rubber, from natural to synthetic, and even some non-rubber elastomeric materials are modified to become rubber-like. A common example of the latter is Rubber-Modified Vinyl, or RMV, which is a PVC with additives to make it more resistant to abrasion and certain chemicals. In this article we will review two commonly used rubbers in conveyor belting: SBR and Nitrile.

Styrene-butadiene rubber, commonly known as SBR, is one of the more economical synthetic rubbers used in conveyor belting. It has a high abrasion resistance and flexibility, but lacks some of the performance characteristics of other types of rubber. SBR belts have a high coefficient of friction which provides suitable grip for many woodworking and box sealing applications. It is also common to see a rough top profile on these belts to provide additional release at the exit end of the conveyor.

Nitrile-butadiene rubber, aka NBR or simply Nitrile, is a synthetic rubber with enhanced oil-resistant properties. While nitrile is often used for tough oily applications, it can also be food grade and is frequently used in bakeries as it can receive product at warmer temperatures than conventional PVC or PU. Nitrile can also be treated with carboxylated acids to create a Carboxylated Nitrile, or XNBR. XNBR has increased tear-resistant and strength properties, but loses some of the flexibility of standard Nitrile.

Types of rubber conveyor belts and their applications

Rubber conveyor belts are versatile and durable belts made from layers of rubber and other materials. They are designed to transport various materials, such as bulk goods, packages, and raw materials, from one point to another within a production or transportation system.

Types of Rubber Conveyor Belts

2.1 General Purpose Conveyor Belts

General purpose conveyor belts are widely used and suitable for conveying a wide range of materials. They are commonly found in industries such as agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. These belts offer excellent versatility, moderate temperature resistance, and good abrasion resistance.

2.2 Heat-Resistant Conveyor Belts

Heat-resistant conveyor belts are designed to withstand high temperatures, making them suitable for applications involving hot materials or environments. Industries such as steel, cement, and glass rely on heat-resistant conveyor belts to transport materials without deformation or damage.

2.3 Oil-Resistant Conveyor Belts

Oil-resistant conveyor belts are specifically designed to resist the damaging effects of oil and grease. They find applications in industries where oily substances are present, such as recycling plants, automotive manufacturing, and food processing.

2.4 Flame-Resistant Conveyor Belts

Flame-resistant conveyor belts are crucial in industries where there is a risk of fire or combustion. These belts are made from fire-resistant materials, reducing the risk of spreading flames in case of accidents. They are commonly used in coal mines, power plants, and chemical industries.

2.5 Food-Grade Conveyor Belts

Food-grade conveyor belts are manufactured with materials that meet strict hygiene and safety standards. These belts are commonly used in the food and beverage industry, ensuring the contamination-free movement of products such as fruits, vegetables, and packaged goods.

3. Applications of Rubber Conveyor Belts

Manufacturing:

Conveyor belts are used to transport bulk abrasive materials and finished products within manufacturing facilities.

Mining:

Conveyor belts enable the efficient materials transportation of minerals and sintered ores in mining operations.

haichuan supply professional and honest service.

Agriculture:

These belts are utilized in farming and agricultural processes for handling crops, seeds, and livestock feed.

Warehousing and Distribution:

Conveyor belts play a crucial role in streamlining logistics and material handling in warehouses and distribution centers.

Packaging:

Conveyor belts are used in packaging systems to transport packages and facilitate the packaging process.

4. Benefits of Using Rubber Conveyor Belts

Rubber conveyor belts offer numerous benefits, including:

  • Increased Efficiency: Conveyor belts automate the transportation process, reducing manual labor and increasing overall productivity.
  • Versatility: Rubber conveyor belts can handle a wide range of materials and are adaptable to various environments and applications.
  • Cost Savings: By optimizing material flow and reducing manual handling, conveyor belts help save costs in the long run.
  • Safety: Conveyor belts ensure the safe movement of materials, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries in the workplace.
  • Durability: Rubber conveyor belts are designed to withstand heavy loads, harsh environments, and regular wear and tear.

5. Maintenance and Care Tips

To maintain the performance and longevity of rubber conveyor belts, consider the following maintenance tips:

Regular Inspections:

Check for signs of damage, wear, and misalignment.

Cleaning:

Keep the belts clean from debris, dust, and contaminants.

Proper Tension:

Ensure the belts are appropriately tensioned to prevent slippage or excessive strain.

Lubrication:

Apply suitable lubricants to pulleys and bearings to reduce friction.

Prompt Repairs:

Address any issues or damages promptly to avoid further complications.

By understanding the different types of rubber conveyor belts and their applications, you can make informed decisions regarding the selection and usage of these belts in your industry. Remember to prioritize regular maintenance and care to prolong their lifespan and optimize their performance.
