Hose clamp size refers to their clamping diameter range, which is listed as a minimum and maximum useable diameter. To determine the size needed, install the hose on the fitting or pipe (which expands the hose), measure the outside diameter of the hose, then select a clamp that accommodates that diameter in about the middle of its range.
Make sure that the diameter of your hose is greater than the minimum diameter of the clamp and less than the maximum diameter of the clamp. for example, knowing that our hose is 2, I have determined that the range of 1-3 (SAE Size 40) is the clamp that would best fit my hose application. At the same time, more sizes such as SAE Size 36,44,48 are also suitable.
If there are professional tools such as micrometer calipers, you can measure the outer diameter of the hose according to the instructions of the professional tools. When measuring, be careful not to deform the hose without applying pressure. Directly measure the outer diameter (abbreviated as OD), take two measurements at right angles to each other, and then take the average value. Or measure the thickness of the hose after measuring the inner diameter, the outer diameter is equal to the inner diameter plus twice the tube thickness.
For hoses with appropriate diameters and hose sections that are not deformed by the cutting operation, use an optical magnifying glass with 0.1mm graduations to take two measurements at perpendicular positions, and then take the average value.
If the hose is not particularly round, when high accuracy is required, the hose should be installed on the pipe for measurement to prevent the deformation of the hose from causing inaccurate data. If there is only a hose, you can measure the circumference abbreviated as Cof the hose with a measuring tape, and then use the formula D=C/π (π3.) to get the outer diameter .
Hose clamps are used to seal hoses and pipes. Worm drive hose clamps are very popular because they are adjustable, easy to use and require no special toolsa screwdriver, nut driver or socket wrench is all that is needed to install and remove. A captive screw/worm gear mates with slots in the band to adjust the diameter of the clamp over a specified range. The band can be fully released (opened) so hose clamps can be installed on hoses and tubing already in place.
Standard series hose clamps are the most common and are found in vehicle and industrial applications. Minimum clamp diameter is 3/8" and the typical maximum is about 8 7/16". They have 1/2" wide bands and 5/16" slotted hex head screws. These clamps meet or exceed SAE torque specifications.
Mini series hose clamps are used with small diameter hoses and tubing such as air, fluid and fuel lines. The minimum diameter is 6mm and the maximum can be customized as your ned. The bands are 5/16" wide and the screw is a 1/4" slotted hex head. Their small size permits installation in confined places.
W2 stainless steel hose clamps, which are recommended for most applications, have a stainless steel band; the plated screw and housing offer fair corrosion resistance. For good corrosion resistance, choose all stainless steel SS300 W4 clamps, which have a stainless steel band, screw and housing.

If one worm clamp isn't cutting it, two worm clamps will.
At the time of this writing, we carry three styles of clamps: Stainless Steel Worm Gear Clamps, Pinch Clamps, and T-Bolt Clamps. Each of these are used in a similar fashion, to secure tubing or hose over a barbed insert fitting. The clamps accomplish this in a different manner unique to each clamp. Determining what clamp is right for your application is an easy task with the guide below. Links to the items mentioned in this guide will be included throughout the article.
Stainless Steel Worm Gear Clamps
These are often referred to as Screw Clamps or Jubilee Clamps; if you bump into one of those terms theyll be a form of worm gear clamp. They are also referred to as Band Clamps, however, band clamps can also be strap clamps.
Stainless Steel Worm Gear Clamps have a zinc coating (galvanized) for increased resistance to corrosion. They are frequently used in agriculture, automotive, and industrial applications. They are made of a steel band, one end of which contains a screw; when the screw is turned it acts as a worm drive, pulling the threads of the band and tightening it around the tubing. These types of clamps are mostly used with ½ or larger tubing.
Worm gear clamps are easy to use, remove and are completely reusable. Other than a flathead screwdriver, no additional tools are needed to install one. Worm gear clamps can loosen over time due to external forces exerting tension on the screw, so its a good idea to check the tightness of the screw from time to time to ensure it is tight and secure. Worm clamps can also apply uneven pressure which may not be ideal in all applications; this will cause some tubing distortion, though generally nothing severe in a low-pressure irrigation system.
Though no specialty tool is required to install or remove these, Murray does produce a clamp key that can speed up installation and removal: Murray Clamp Key.
The biggest criticism of worm gear clamps is that they can loosen over time and can slightly distort the tubing/hose over time since most of the tension is on one side of the clamp.
Pinch Clamps
These are often referred to as Oetiker Clamps, Ear Clamps, and Crimp Clamps. These types of clamps have a protruding ear that is squeezed together with a crimp tool in order to close the clamp over the hose/tubing it is meant to secure. These types of clamps are more frequently used in permanent applications since they are essentially a one-time-use item. They also work exceptionally well in low-pressure situations, such as drip irrigation. They are considered amongst the easiest to use and among the most effective over the long term.

Other than being a one-time use, the biggest drawback to these clamps is that it can be difficult to get the crimp tool into tight spaces -- this is more of a problem seen in automotive applications, but it can be a problem in irrigation systems, particularly when clamping in a valve box or similarly small space.
T-Bolt Clamps
T-Bolt Clamps are often referred to as Racing Camps or EFI Clamps. They are a good balance between worm gear clamps and pinch clamps. Unlike worm gear clamps, these provide 360° of tension so you dont end up with a distorted hose. Unlike pinch clamps, these can be reused at any time and are easy to remove from tubing and hoses.
The biggest drawback to T-Bolt clamps is generally only in their price, as they do cost a bit more than the other two clamp styles we carry. It has been reported that these can also lose a bit of tension over time like worm-gear clamps, but without the associated distortion of the tubing.
