For gifting to a young, entry-level tech, cost might not seem like an important consideration, and there's nothing wrong with that. Having said that, I think one of the most valuable gifts you might give him would be to also advise him to buy the best quality tools he can find, at the best price he can find them. I spent more money than I should have on tool trucks in my youth. Had I the chance for a re-do, in these days with the Internet, I would shop heavily in the used tool market on E-bay. There are countless vintage, American-made tools of quality selling at very attractive prices. And, as is the case with Wilde (who private-labels tools for numerous other brands), there are still quality tools being made right here in the USA at great prices if you just do some research. A lot of young folks who get started in the trade don't stay with it for life, instead moving on to other career paths (count me among them). The uncertainty about that only increases the value of not over-spending on tools.

While I understand the "buy once, cry once" perspective, I now recognize that shiny tools don't stay pristine if you use them much, and wages for working class folks don't provide a bottomless pool of funds. Paying far less than tool truck prices for quality tools allows you to acquire more tools, buy a home, raise a family, and save and invest for the retirement years. I've accumulated a lot of pliers through the years, and nearly all of them are plenty adequate to get done whatever needs to get done. There are very few offerings on tool trucks that would tempt me today.
