Hello everyone, I have recently noticed that many people seem to wonder what "gold supported by metal" really is. Questions such as: is it real gold? Is it gold filled? Is it plated? Are all common questions about gold supported by metal.
Gold filled-These products usually only have a small percentage of actual gold content and in terms of monetary value, do not have enough actual gold to have a gold value. Some of the markings you might see for gold filled jewelry will look like this: 1/10 14k gf or 1/10 14k. This just means that only one tenth of the weight of the item is 14k(58.5% pure gold) so a 1/10 14k gold filled item weighing 5 grams(actual 14k gold weighing 5grams is only 2.925 grams of pure gold) is only a tenth of 2.925 grams which is .29 grams. Also separating the gold from the base metal(usually brass) costs money as well. So gold filled jewelry does not generally carry a gold value what so ever.

Gold plated- These items are usually a brass piece covered with an immeasurable amount of actual gold. Generally .05% of the weight of the piece itsself, If that. These items are not considered gold, if you see gold plated picture someone spraying gold spray paint onto a brass item, the value between a gold plated item and a brass item sprayed with gold spray paint will have the same value, since there really isnt any gold content.
Now for the more rare Gold supported by metal-These items are indeed real gold combined with a separate metal to support the soft gold. So if a piece of jewelry says "14k gold supported by metal" this means the item is actually 14k gold, combined with a second metal(sometimes silver or platinum even, also steel), sometimes the thick gold core is supported by a thin layer of metal to maintain its integrity. Sometimes this may mean that the piece has 14k gold, with a completely separate metal used for components(usually watches, a steel gear or shell may be used to help protect the 14k gold inside. These items do carry a gold value, because there is indeed pure gold content that can be obtained by melting these items down. These items are not considered gold filled or gold plated because there is a measurable gold weight of whatever karat gold the item may be. For example a watch that says 14k gold supported by metal is indeed real gold, it just has another separate metal(sometimes combined in seperable layers used to make the item more durable) also pieces may contain seperate 14k gold components and seperate steel components ie a gear in a watch may be steel while the rest is 14k gold. These items are valuable because there is a measurable gold content enough to melt down. So a pawn shop generally wont buy gold filled or gold plated jewelry, but they will generally purchase gold items supported by metal. These metals sometimes are sterling silver or platinum. So obviously the item would be valuable.
There is one last piece that will only carry a sterling silver value and those are pieces that are a sterling silver base plated with gold. Mark's include .925 14kgp or 14kgp sterling. These items will only carry a silver value.
