Need Advise: Synthetic Stucco vs Hard Coat/Traditional

Yes, you can tint standard stucco. That was the traditional way of doing it.

The standard stucco vs synthetic isn't as simple as the same prep and then the finish. That is one way. However, most use a different prep for the synthetic. Instead of scratch, brown, and then color coat, they use a single coat mix of cement and fiberglass fiber, and then paint the synthetic over it. That's why woodpeckers easily knock holes in it; it's only 1/8" to 1/4" thick.

Traditional stucco is a 3/8" to 1/2" scratch coat over chicken wire or stucco mesh. Followed by a "brown" coat, that is smooth, and 1/4" to 3/8" thick. Followed by a colored thin coat that's about 1/4" thick. Total of about 1" of solid concrete protection, with mesh or wire reinforcement. It cracks, but stays sound.

The best of all worlds is scratch and brown coat ala original standard stucco, but put on synthetic instead of colored concrete for the final coat.

The mix of traditional and synthetic gives you the best benefits of the standard system (thick, strong, insect and woodpecker and damage resistant) and the benefit of the synthetic (stretches so hides cracks, easier to make good looking texture, even color over the whole job, easy to recoat when it starts looking poor).

I've done two houses with synthetic over true scratch and brown. I've been exceptionally pleased with both. I've personally chosen to not use the new synthetic "system", because I've had problems with it on several commercial jobs. Those problems were dents where people bumped into it or leaned on it, woodpecker holes, insect infestations, and delamination of the coating.

In Phoenix, you can get a good contractor that will do a hybrid scratch, brown, synthetic as described above. But, they wont' be the low bidder. A lot of other places will promise you a "3 part" job, and that will be foam, mesh/fiberglass/cement paste, and then synthetic elastomeric paint. In other words, EIFS. Others will do a foam/paper, wire mesh and single brown coat, no scratch coat and then cover with Synthetic immediately and call it a 3 part system. This isn't as strong, and cracks a LOT. The synthetic hides the cracks for a few months or years.

For the absolute best job, do foam/paper, wire mesh, true scratch, true brown, and then synthetic color coat after minimum 30 day cure of the brown coat. BTW: The photo's of your contractors prep look pretty good. The weep screed and provision for drainage help avoid rot. I'd just verify that you're getting a true scratch and brown prep job.

Stucco is a versatile and durable finishing material used for exterior walls and façades. For contractors and builders alike, one critical component in successful stucco applications is the wire mesh used to reinforce the stucco, ensuring it can withstand various environmental factors. In this blog, we&#;ll explore the benefits of using Smooth Stucco Wire Mesh from an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and provide answers to some frequently asked questions.

Benefits of Smooth Stucco Wire Mesh OEM

1. Superior Strength and Stability: One of the primary benefits of Smooth Stucco Wire Mesh is its exceptional strength. Designed to meet industry standards, this mesh provides the structural integrity necessary to support the weight of stucco while preventing cracks and deformation. Smooth surface finishes reduce the risk of adhesion failures and ensure a more uniform application.

2. Custom Tailoring: Choosing an OEM means selecting a product tailored to your specific project requirements. Whether you need a particular size, gauge, or coating, OEM providers offer customization options that ensure the wire mesh fits your project perfectly. This level of flexibility is invaluable in achieving consistent and satisfactory results.

3. Enhanced Moisture Management: Moisture can be a significant threat to the longevity of stucco finishes. Smooth Stucco Wire Mesh features excellent drainage properties, allowing excess moisture to escape while ensuring that the stucco bonds uniformly. This reduces the chances of water damage and mold growth, extending the lifespan of your building's facade.

4. Easier Installation: An OEM wire mesh product typically comes with clear guidelines and support, reducing installation time and complexity. The smooth finish minimizes friction when applying stucco, allowing applicators to work more efficiently and effectively.

5. Cost-Effective Solution: While the initial investment in high-quality Smooth Stucco Wire Mesh might be higher than cheaper alternatives, the long-term savings are significant. By preventing cracking and structural issues, this mesh helps to avoid costly repairs and replacements. Additionally, the longevity of the wall finish makes it a smart investment for contractors and homeowners alike.
