Understanding the Benefits and Drawbacks of Trailer-mounted Drilling Rigs

My journey with trailer-mounted drilling rigs began back in 2008, right after the collapse of the mining industry. During that period, I was predominantly occupied with building blast hole rigs, primarily mounted on trucks. Circumstances led me to dive into designing and creating trailer-mounted drilling rigs. My initial designs were extremely heavy, making them nearly as cumbersome as truck-mounted rigs, merely transferred onto a dual-axle platform. One might wonder, why opt for a trailer rig? Is there a specific market reliant on them, or is it just seen as a more budget-friendly alternative?

The urban landscape is constantly evolving, with a noticeable influx of people moving from sparsely populated areas to densely populated ones. This shift means that many individuals interested in drilling boreholes have already constructed their residences. Their homes often present challenges that restrict the entry of truck-mounted rigs without causing structural damages.

This is where the utility of trailer-mounted drilling rigs becomes apparent.

However, trailer rigs also exhibit notable disadvantages. They often lack the sturdiness needed for drilling into hard rock, or if they possess the capability, they can only tackle shallow depths. For such tougher terrains, the drilling diameter is notably smaller compared to what can be achieved with a truck-mounted rig. On the other hand, to match the performance, some trailer rigs become so hefty that transporting them can become a daunting task.

So, what constitutes an ideal trailer rig?

An optimum trailer rig isn’t excessively heavy. Legally, mechanical braked trailers on public roads should weigh no more than 3500 Kg. Thus, aiming for a weight under this threshold becomes essential.

Ideally, the trailer rig should be able to drill comparable diameters to truck rigs, which typically is around a 6.5 Inch hole using a 177 mm steel casing in loose formations. A 6-inch hammer for a 6.5-inch hole would ultimately need an 8.5-inch drill bit, implying the ideal rig should facilitate drilling an 8.5-inch diameter using a 6-inch hammer.

How deep should an effective rig drill? Hand pump wells generally don't exceed 60 meters, owing to the lifting capacity of hand pumps. However, deeper drilling capabilities are desirable, especially with the dynamic water tables in urban regions. Therefore, drilling up to 200 meters sounds reasonable for rigs under 3.5 tons without expecting too many miracles.

Considering torque, most rigs drilling typical depths and diameters have rotational torque between 3500–3800 Nm. The HBM80 Staffa, a widely accepted truck rig motor, has a maximum torque of 19.9 Nm/bar. Given that truck rigs usually operate gear pumps at around 180 Bar, calculating torque yields 3582 Nm – hence, an ideal trailer rig should surpass or match this torque level.

To pull the drill string, hammer, and bit out from a 200-meter borehole demands specific lifting power. Ensuring accurate calculations, let's consider a 3-meter sch 40 drill rod weighing 47 Kg each for an 89mm diameter at a depth of 200 meters. Adding the weights of other essential components such as the hammer, bit, and stabilizers, the lifting requirement becomes about 3.650 tons. The trailer rig should have a pull-back capacity exceeding this for efficient performance.

Determining the necessary power involves mathematical computations. Hydraulic kilowatts (Kw) are derived using the formula: (flow in Litre/min X Pressure in Bar) /60. Based on previous torque and lifting requirements at different speeds, factoring in efficiency suggests that 31.25 Kw engine power should suffice.

Size is another critical factor – the rig should be comparable in dimensions to a Land Cruiser, especially not exceeding its width and height with the tower down.

Summary of Ideal Trailer Rig Requirements:

  1. Weight under 3500 Kg
  2. Can drill up to 200 meters with an 8.5-inch diameter
  3. Minimum torque of 3582 Nm
  4. Maximum rotation speed of 90 RPM
  5. Maximum lifting speed of 350 mm per second
  6. Minimum engine power of 31.25 Kw
  7. Size comparable to or smaller than a Land Cruiser

Meeting these criteria, I developed the Spider V4 XXL Trailer Rig:

The rig weighs 3300 Kg and is rated to drill beyond 200 meters, thanks to its 9-ton pull-back capacity. It offers a substantial torque of 4800 Nm, capable of rotating between 0-90 RPM equipped with a dedicated mud/air box. Powered by a tested F3L912 engine delivering 33 Kw, this trailer rig balances capability and performance. Priced at R680 000 or $49500, alternative, cheaper options are available, but it is worth considering the value provided.

Choosing the Perfect Drilling Rig

Drilling is integral to numerous projects, and at some point, a new drill rig becomes a necessity. If you're seeking reliable guidance for purchasing the right rig, you're in good hands. Delve into the basics of selecting the perfect drill rig based on your specific needs and objectives.

Different Types of Drilling Explained

Pile driving: Supporting structures on unstable terrains

Micropile drilling: Reinforcing existing buildings

Oil and water well drilling: Accessing underground resources

Geothermal drilling: Harnessing earth’s core heat

Blast drilling: Utilized in quarrying activities

Continuous flight auger: Maintaining borehole stability with drill chips

First, let's clarify what an auger is - a construction tool designed to create holes in the earth. Augers come in various sizes, ranging from massive structures to lightweight equipment manageable by a single person.

Drilling rigs serve a multitude of purposes, including but not limited to mineral sampling, testing soil and groundwater properties, and aiding in underground installations. Choosing the suitable rig doesn't have to be daunting; it’s about understanding your primary requirements and the terrain it will operate on.

Key Considerations

Always select a rig tailored to the specific terrain.

Thoroughly inspect the rig before purchasing. Ensure compliance with quality standards and adequate drilling fluid supply to prevent mishaps.

Regular maintenance is crucial for extending the lifespan of the rig.

Consider safety, reliability, and user-friendliness before finalizing your purchase.

Ensure timely rig delivery and efficient after-sales service from the drilling contractor to handle any potential breakdowns.

Evaluate the speed and power of the drilling rig for increased efficiency and time-saving during drilling operations.

Opt for contractors with a global presence and positive customer references for market credibility and trustworthiness.

In the drilling industry, ancillary equipment such as drill bits and pipes are vital. If purchasing from a contractor, inspect these components meticulously beforehand.

Comprehensive research is imperative to assess factors like size, capacity, and transportation, while aligning with your business's budget constraints.

Interesting Facts

There are primarily two types of rigs: self-propelled tracked and truck or trailer-mounted versions.

Tracked rigs are ideal for low-speed mobility over uneven or loose terrains. Conversely, truck or trailer-mounted rigs, while more cost-effective, have limited mobility and rely on external power sources like transport trucks or generators.

To ensure workplace safety, equip workers with appropriate protective gear before commencing any drilling operations.
